Board Position Details

Board Member Our only position on the board is "member" and members are expected to be adaptable generalists with passion and ideas. We need people who can seek out and bring in steady gift and grant money, cultivate volunteers and students who can donate class fees and purchase parts without alienating those who need the doors wide open and no required costs. We need bicycle mechanics who love to teach, to expand our offered classes. Non-English language skills are a plus.

  • Board Term: At Will (see notes)
  • Financial Contribution: Board members are required to fundraise on the organization's behalf.
  • Faith-based Organization: We are not a faith-based organization.
  • Skills: bicycle mechanic, fundraising, outreach, teaching, vision, z

Notes:

Board members serve at will, board meetings (monthly) are required, as well as responsive communication (email) about board decisions that may come up between meetings.

About Freewheel Bicycle Collective

At the heart of Freewheel are three principles: 1.Transportation is a basic human right. 2. Education empowers social and economic justice. 3. Things are made to be reused. Freewheel has operated in Madison for the last 15 years, recycling directly by turning old bikes into new bikes (diverting literal tons of waste from landfill!) teaching free classes of all kinds (both in our shop and at community locations), and giving away as many bicycles as we possibly can, both locally and to partners in other states and in Africa. (12000 is our rough estimate...) Our last giveaway shipment was at the end of December, and our free open shop hours, are currently every Friday, 11-5.
