Hope & A Future is developing a pioneering neighborhood model where aging adults and young families flourish together. We call the model a Therapeutic Interactive Intergenerational Neighborhood or TIIN. The neighborhood is intentionally Intergenerational, financially diverse and inclusive. We develop culturally relevant programs around the needs and strengths of neighbors. All generations work on individualized goals. In our next phase of building healthy neighbors efforts to support each other will be coordinated each week through an internal time bank. Young and old will benefit from purposeful roles and the sense of belonging they provide. Some support staff will live onsite to provide service, mentor and be available to empower neighbors as they plan to help others while being helped. Social support, purpose, and belonging will help all neighbors flourish. A variety of services and programs will be offered onsite in the shared indoor and outdoor community space.
Summary
THERAPEUTIC: The detrimental effects of loneliness and isolation are replaced with purpose and belonging in the staffed intentional neighborhood. Hopelessness is replaced with goal-directed living. Stress and trauma are alleviated with social support and trauma-informed care, which have been scientifically shown to improve both physical and mental health.
INTERACTIVE: A unique combination of housing, services, and programs bring people of diverse ages, culture, and financial background together with intention. Intergenerational volunteers from the greater community add richness to the life of the TIIN and the greater community. Interactive classes for people interested in TIIN living set the stage. Together staff and participants explore diversity awareness and inclusion, goal-directed living, the sharing of gifts and talents as well as requesting and offering help and support where needed.
INTERGENERATIONAL: TIIN Programs are built around the notion that older adults and young families have the potential to help each other flourish. Older Adults bring a lifetime of wisdom and the young bring energy and the joy of learning. Life is enriched with meaningful intergenerational relationships. And Generations of Purpose are the result!
NEIGHBORHOOD: Independent Housing for Older Adults and young families is connected to shared indoor community spaces and surrounded by shared green space. The neighborhood nurse and some support staff reside in the neighborhood Adult Family Home. Life is genuinely shared by a welcoming extended family of friends.
Our first phase of development is complete. We have 5.5 acres of land in Madison and run an award-winning Adult Family Home with an intergenerational twist. Lower wage-earning staff have the opportunity to live on site. In exchange for helping with evening and weekend hours, they receive a stable home and residents receive a stable staff. Young and old flourish and move forward together. Seniors are cared for by a family of friends including hospice care. Younger caregivers move forward with life goals with the encouragement of their family of friends.
We are planning to build independent housing and offer adult daycare, child care and an after school program in our next phase. There will also be a multipurpose space, stage, small commercial kitchen and accessible development of our green space and gardens. Interactive classes for interested people are under development.
Board Position
Marketing: As we move into the next stage, branding and messaging are more important. This will be important for everything from fundraising to attracting potential residents interested in intentional intergenerational neighborhood living. Input would also be desired as we continue to develop classes. This role will be new for our board so the ideal board member will help us create and define this role.
